Steelers vs Saints: Positional Grades

Quarterback
Austin- (A) Ben Roethlisberger diced up a defense that was very hot at the time and didn’t turn it over. I thought he was fantastic, he even out performed Drew Brees, so that earns an A.
John- (A) He was a little off target early, but I felt as though Ben Roethlisberger played his best game of the season.  Maybe it’s recency bias as well, but I thought it was one of the best games he’s played in recent years. Against that defense in that building, Roethlisberger was terrific.  He made good calls at the line of scrimmage, threw the ball with authority and distributed the ball effectively. He certainly played well enough to win on Sunday.
Running Backs
Austin- (C) Between Ridley’s fumble, Jaylen Samuels missing a block that led to a sack for the second straight week and Rosie Nix falling short on the the fake punt.  I really couldn’t give this group higher than a C. Still, Jaylen Samuels continued to be a bright spot as averaged 4.4 yards per carry on his 12 carries, so it wasn’t a complete failure of a performance.
John- (C+) Stevan Ridley’s critical fumble really impactful in this grade and it came at a very inopportune time with the offense firing on all cylinders.  Jaylen Samuels made the most of the few touches he got, but it was understandable why the Steelers didn’t run the ball a lot in this game. Still, he looks like a solid weapon that will be an important part of the offense next season.  Samuels did have another hiccup as a pass blocker though, as whiff led to a sack for the second week in a row.
Wide Receivers
Austin- (B+) The fumble sucks, and it’s really what knocked down what could have been an A+ performance with both AB and Juju over 100 yards. The fumble was costly though, it directly ended the game and that’s gonna knock it down a bunch for me.
John- (B) It’s unfortunate, but you can’t overlook the game-sealing fumble by Juju Smith-Schuster.  The Steelers likely try a game-tying field goal at the very least, instead the fumble sealed their fate.  Otherwise both he and Antonio Brown were amazing. It hasn’t been often both guys have absolutely gone off at the same time like they did in this game.  It didn’t matter what the Saints were doing, both guys torched the secondary. Unfortunately receivers not named Brown or Smith-Schuster caught just five passes (four official) for 20 yards.  Eli Rogers did catch a two point conversion that tied the game at 14 that was important.
Tight Ends
Austin- (B) despite them not really being used in the passing game (only 1 target to a tight end, that being Vance McDonald’s 49 yard run) I felt like they had a bounce back blocking game here against a tough defensive front.
John- (B-) For whatever reason, the tight ends targets this season have gone down dramatically over the course of the year (might have something to do with the great receivers).  Vance McDonald had a huge 49 yard grab that set up a score for the Steelers. But, that was the only target a tight end caught all day. McDonald and James were solid run blockers against a good defensive front.
Offensive Line
Austin- (B+) I only really count 2 sacks against them, and that’s a solid outing against a tough defensive front, but I still feel like they could have been even better than that, but still really great performance, it’s just a group I have high expectations for.
John- (A-) These guys have been great pass blockers all season and it continued again on Sunday.  Roethlisberger was sacked three times, but one of them was fully on Jaylen Samuels and only giving up two sacks on 53 dropbacks is a win against this defensive front.  They got a solid push against the Saints defensive line at times. But, there were other times they didn’t get the job done, specifically on Stevan Ridley’s fumble.
Defensive Line
Austin- (A-) I felt like the pressure was there and they were doing really well against the run, despite giving up three rushing touchdowns. Still, as a whole the Saints only averaged three yards a carry and Tuitt got one of the two sacks on the day, so I’ll say it was a solid performance.
John- (B+) They did a good job controlling their gaps in the ground game, but didn’t get enough pressure as a unit early on in the game.  They were able to establish consistent control later on in the game though. They were not the reason the defense yielded 31 points.
Linebackers
Austin- (B+) Watt was giving the Saints offensive line so much trouble and as a whole the linebackers got tackles, but there is still room for improvement.
John- (B+) T.J. Watt has really become a special player the past few weeks, with so many question marks at this position, Watt has shown that he is a presence.  The other linebackers were quiet.
Defensive Backs
Austin- (B+) Now this is hard, because I really have mixed feelings about this group. Sean Davis had the best game of the year, maybe even the best game of his career, Mike Hilton led the team in tackles and had a tackle for a loss, and Coty Sensabaugh had two pass breaks up. The penalties on this unit killed the defense, but like how do I take away points when the calls were atrocious at times? I am going to give them a (B+), but I feel like it should be lower.
John- (C-) Sean Davis had an interception and Mike Hilton had six tackles.  But, at the end of the day these guys got torched again and gave up several bad gains, including one on a third and 20 with the game on the line.  You CANNOT give that up and Morgan Burnett bit hard on an underneath route, leaving Ted Ginn wide open. These guys just didn’t make enough plays.
Specialists
Austin- (B) Boswell was perfect on 4 kicks, Berry only punted twice but did okay, Ryan Switzer had 1 bad punt return, LJ Fort had a punt blocked, then Rosie Nix prematurely celebrated on the fake punt after not getting it, so I am going to give them a (B).
John- (B+) Chris Boswell had his best game of the season and Jordan Berry had his usual good punt/bad punt day.  L.J. Fort blocked a field goal and they didn’t allow the Saints to have a single return all day long. The fake punt, I am pinning more on the coaching staff for not using the offense in that situation.  Furthermore, on that play upback Jordan Dangerfield was motioned out of his spot, essentially playing your hand that you’re running something bizarre before the play starts. Bad design.
Coaching
Austin- (C-) I am still triggered by Mike Tomlin deciding to not challenging the ruling of an incomplete pass to Michael Thomas that Sean Davis broke up.  To me that looked like a fumble and when he’s been challenging stupid plays all year, I was annoyed. For Randy Fichtner, I thought the game plan was perfect, the Steelers diced the Saints defense up with ease and were even getting a little ground game going, but Keith Butler remains atrocious having Vince Williams on Michael Thomas on what felt like the 3rd play of defense. Also I question the decision to send Cameron Sutton on multiple cornerback blitzes.

John- (D+) I felt that Randy Fichtner called a good game for the most part, but his decision to have Stevan Ridley run out of a two tight end set on third and two is probably not the best idea.  Keith Butler seems intent on getting himself fired. His gameplan was absolutely atrocious, blitzing the quarterback with the quickest release in the NFL is a terrible idea. Doing it actively and with heavy numbers that include your cornerbacks is idiotic beyond belief.  Most of the defensive failures in this game, especially early on, can be attributed to another bad coaching gameplan and effort by Butler. Mike Tomlin was alright in this game, however I have a few problems with him. One is that he didn’t throw the challenge flag on a pass play where it looked like Ted Ginn’s first foot dragged out of bounds before his second foot came down.  I know he has struggled with challenges greatly this year, but there’s no reason to save them in this game, season was on the line. Finally with the fake punt, I don’t hate the idea of being aggressive there considering Drew Brees was on the other side. However, considering how well the offense had been playing, I would not have left that up to a fake punt.

Patriots Vs Steelers: Positional Grades

Down goes the giant!  The Steelers finally defeated their nemesis in the New England Patriots on Sunday.  Surprisingly enough, the defense was the standout unit, holding the typically explosive Tom Brady and Co. to just 10 points and only three after their opening drive.  The offense which had contributions from a ton of different guys made enough plays to win, thanks in part to the fantastic effort of Jaylen Samuels.  Let's see how everybody graded out.

Quarterbacks

Austin- (B) I felt like Ben Roethlisberger was solid in this one. He had an interception that hurts his stats, but it wasn’t his fault, so you gotta keep that in mind too. He still missed a few throws though and did have a bad interception that was on him.
John- (B) Roethlisberger missed a few passes and his deep ball was off.  But, largely Roethlisberger was solid and he made the big plays he needed to make for the Steelers to win.  I really blame his second interception more on Antonio Brown, but his first interception was a bad throw and decision.

Running Backs

Austin- (A) Very close to an A+, but for me an A+ means an almost flawless game where the mistakes don’t hurt you, and that one sack where Samuels didn’t pass protect just barely puts them under. If it were a number grade it would be 94.9/100

John- (A) You can’t ask for more than what you got from Jaylen Samuels and Stevan Ridley.  They both ran hard and with a purpose, Samuels was dynamic and both of his catches were huge too.  What a day for the rookie.

Wide Receivers

Austin-  (A-) Nobody really had a standout game by themselves, but, that’s because Ben Roethlisberger spread the ball around and I felt that all the receivers played well when they got their chances. Juju Smith-Schuster Moss’d J.C. Jackson for a big gain, James Washington made a big 32 yard grab and then a 24 yard catch and run, Antonio Brown got a touchdown and Eli Rogers converted a key 3rd down and four early and drew a defensive pass interference penalty.  I was happy with what they did together.

John- (A-) It’s probably the first time we have seen significant contributions from more than three receivers, it was an added bonus that five of the six active receivers (special teamer Darrius Heyward-Bey excluded) all made plays.  James Washington finally had the breakout game we have all been waiting for.

Tight Ends

Austin- (B) Not the most productive game, but Vance McDonald did get the opening score and converted a clutch 3rd down and nine that allowed the Steelers to push for a late field goal. Jesse James also got a nine yard grab.  Overall, I felt like they had a bounce back game, they blocked well in the ground game too.

John- (A-) These guys, like the offensive line, were awesome run blockers.  They really worked
over the Patriots defensive front all day long and even though they didn’t put up huge receiving numbers, they had big grabs.  Vance Mcdonald especially had two huge catches.

Offensive Line

Austin- (B+) Speaking of bounce back games in run blocking, man were they opening up holes for Jaylen Samuels in this game. They also protected Ben Roethlisberger well. Stats say they gave up two sacks, but one was a coverage sack where Roethlisberger had the ball for a very long time, while the other wasn’t really on the line, Samuels just missed an assignment.

John- (A) This was a nice response after a big disappointment in Oakland.  They pushed the Patriots front around consistently and protected Ben Roethlisberger very well, the two sacks allowed were not on them.

Defensive Line

Austin- (A-) Constant pressure from this unit with 11 combined tackles and 4 quarterback hits, I was happy.

John- (B) They pushed the pocket a lot and made Tom Brady uncomfortable, however, they were susceptible against the run at times.  They could have sealed gaps a bit better.

Linebackers

Austin- (A) T.J. Watt was an animal this game and all of the tackles for a loss this game came from linebackers, so I give them a lot of credit.

John- (B) Mixed bag from these guys, Bud Dupree was solid, so was Jon Bostic.  I really liked the games from T.J. Watt and Vince Williams.  Watt had pressure all day long and Vince Williams was all over the field.  They struggled at times against the run though.

Defensive Backs

Austin- (B+) Joe Haden had an amazing day where he was the first Steelers defensive back to intercept brady since Chris Hope in 2005, then besides that first touchdown debacle I felt like they did pretty good as a whole.

John- (A-) These guys really stepped up as a unit on Sunday.  Can’t give them an A, because of the awful touchdown they allowed to a wide open Chris Hogan.  But, they were largely great.

Specialists

Austin- (C+) Berry’s punting wasn’t great, Boswell missed a 32 yarder, but he also hit a more important 48 yarder later in the game.  Ryan Switzer’s lone kick return went past the 25 to the 27 and Patterson’s lone kick return only made it to the 23, so there was a lot of averaging out in this.

John- (C+) Chris Boswell’s final field goal was critical and saves this grade.  Otherwise the special teams as a whole was disappointing to average.  Jordan Berry was not very good and Boswell inexplicably missed a 32 yard field goal that could have really been a problem if the Steelers hadn’t held twice on defense late in the game.

Coaching

Austin- (B+) I got to give props to Keith Butler for finally finding a way to stop Gronk. also Steelers won the penalty battle by far. Still there was a dumb challenge in this game.

John- (A-) The awful challenge hurts the grade, but Randy Fichtner and Keith Butler had excellent game plans this week and they finally put their guys in a position to succeed.

Season 3 Episode 61: Steelers Slay The Nemesis, Down Patriots 17-10

The Pittsburgh Steelers finally did it. They beat the New England Patriots, ending a five game skid in the series. Shockingly enough it came on the strength of the defense too. With such a shocking win, there is so much to talk about. So, Austin and John get right into the game and they go over the key moments that led to the big victory. Then they talk about action from the rest of the league and where the Steelers are headed with only two games to play.

Steelers vs Raiders: Positional Grades

The Steelers are 7-5-1 after a loss to the Oakland Raiders that really can’t be described by words.  Words truly don’t encapsulate the magnitude of the problems the Steelers had this week and how far they have fallen the last three weeks.  Here we try and figure out who was most to blame and who did stand out.
Quarterbacks:
Austin- (C+) Ben Roethlisberger went 25/29 but at the end of the day, that was because the Steelers were running a dink and dunk offense. There weren't really any special throws, but I can remember some bad ones, including two bad throws back-to-back where he threw behind Switzer on what should have been a touchdown, then on Juju’s actual touchdown. He also missed a wide open Juju running for the goal line on what would have been a nice 50+ yard touchdown.
John- (C+) At the time I really wasn’t all that impressed with Ben Roethlisberger.  He did miss some throws in this one and got bailed out by a few nice catches, not to mention he should have been picked on his final touchdown pass.  That being said Roethlisberger only had four incompletions and despite being injured he came back and engineered a touchdown drive in the clutch while clearly in pain.  Outside of the opening drive, he had the Steelers in scoring position for every possession where he was quarterback. Josh Dobbs just wasn’t up to snuff in this one, he used his legs to his advantage, but he tossed a bad interception and missed several other throws.

Running Backs:
Austin- (C+) Ridley got a touchdown and Jaylen Samuels was great through the air, however I just felt like they weren’t very good running. Sure, some of that falls on the offensive line, but there was a few times I found myself saying “you need to run north and south.” but because of the offensive line, I’ll still give them a C+.
John- (B-) It’s not the fault of Jaylen Samuels and Stevan Ridley that their offensive line was hot garbage in terms of run blocking.  I didn’t feel like their ineffectiveness on the ground was all their fault, although they could have been better. Samuels was a nice option in the passing game but it looked like he was a guy that never had more than 12 carries in a game before.

Wide Receivers:
Austin- (C) I wanted more out of everyone else in this game. I get Antonio Brown gets double teamed but he needs to do more. Juju is the only one that produced this game, and I mean James Washington on that hook and ladder nearly got his whole season redeemed, but alas the Steelers fell short on the kick. Regardless, I just feel like this group should have performed better against a weak secondary.
John- (C+) Let’s take away the great day from Juju Smith-Schuster.  Did these guys really do anything special? Antonio Brown was pretty much a non-factor, James Washington chipped in his usual two catches for eleven yards, Ryan Switzer was surprisingly quiet and Darrius Heyward-Bey was utilized on an idiotic end-around on the first drive of the game that lost seven yards.  Smith-Schuster was dynamic once again though. The Steelers have two number one receivers on their team now, there is no longer a debate about that.

Tight Ends:
Austin- (D+) These guys just didn’t produce at all in this game. I wanted something out of them, instead they both struggled in blocking. You hate to see it.
John- (D+) Jesse James and Vance McDonald really struggled with run blocking in this game for the first time all season. They were so bad, they were actually liabilities instead of assets, pretty disappointing. Both James and McDonald were pretty quiet in the passing game too, that’s not good when the wide receivers are having quiet days as well.

Offensive Line:
Austin- (F) Maybe giving up one sack doesn’t fail them because even a broken clock is right twice a day, but the inability to open up holes in the run game was unacceptable, so they fail when you combine those two.
John- (F) This week was almost a pass/fail type of evaluation based on how good they are and how bad the Raiders lines were.  When you look at the terrible job they did opening holes against the second worst rush defense in the league, it really shouldn’t be any surprise that this group has a failing grade.  It gets even worse when you realize they gave up a sack, that injured Ben Roethlisberger no less. I am most upset about the performance from this unit, because unlike coaching, special teams or the defensive backs, I expect a lot more out of the offensive line.

Defensive Line:
Austin- (A-) I felt pretty good about the line coming out of this. Tuitt got a sack and another tackle for a loss, Heyward had 6 total tackles, and then the rest of the line combined for 5 more tackles, they were really getting a lot of stops here. I also felt like pressure was pretty solid, but this was against a not very good line, so I keep it at an A- instead of an A.
John- (A-) It really doesn’t feel like it because of how the game ended, but the defensive line really controlled the line of scrimmage all day long for the most part.  The Raiders were no better at running the football than the Steelers were and they contributed to a strong pass rush that sacked Derek Carr four times. Their performance loses some luster because of the fact they couldn’t come up with a big play on the final defensive series, but these guys are the lone bright spot of a bad defense.

Linebackers:
Austin- (C-) Besides maybe T.J. Watt, it felt like the linebackers were none factors here. I mean yeah, Dupree got a sack and all T.J. had was pressure, but I just felt like no one else really did anything.
John- (C) The outside linebackers were pretty solid with their match-ups, even if they didn’t always show on the stat sheet. But, the inside linebackers struggled, L.J. Fort is a good athlete, but he is no match for Jared Cook, he just wasn’t up to snuff against the run either.  Vince Williams was solid against the run, but got beaten badly on Lee Smith’s goal line touchdown. This position group just doesn’t have the personnel to get the job done without Ryan Shazier, this is where not getting a guy like Leighton Vander Esch or Rashaan Evans really hurts.  Fort isn’t good enough to be a physical run defender and nobody else can cover particularly well.

Defensive Backs:
Austin- (D) Hilton was all over the field and got a tackle for a loss to go with his sack, but even he dropped what could have been a pick 6. None of these guys can catch, it’s actually terrible. They have zero ball skills, if not negative ball skills like Sean Davis where he turns a pick into a touchdown for the opposing team. No bueno.
John- (F) The lack of ball skills that have been displayed by this unit (even the guys who supposedly have some) has been utterly embarrassing and it’s insulting to fans of both this team and people that watch the game of football.  I can’t remember the last time the Steelers earned a takeaway based on play from this unit. Part of it is coaching and part of it is talent deficiencies. But, good lord, somehow the secondary is even worse than we originally through.

Specialists:
Austin- (F) I am sorry Jordan Berry, you actually had an okay day, but the two missed Chris Boswell field goals just weighs down so heavily for me. That combined with Ryan Switzer taking time off the clock at the end by taking it out of the end zone failed it for me. Just couldn’t over look those two things as they had such a large effect on the game.
John- (D-) I warned about the problems that can come with signing a kicker to a long term deal.  My fears have been realized as Chris Boswell missed two more kicks, granted the final one had more to do with the ungodly abomination of an excuse for a field that exists at the Oakland Coliseum.  But, all things considered, I think the Steelers have to bring in another kicker to at least compete with Boswell. His fall from greatness has been unlike anything I have ever seen, his mistakes have cost this team far too often this year and now it’s bordering on being enough to cost the Steelers a playoff berth.  Elsewhere, Ryan Switzer was a non-factor on returns and Jordan Berry saves this grade from being an F, because he had two punts downed inside the 20.

Coaching:
Austin- (F) Keith Butler refuses to adapt or try to take away a team’s strong point and Mike Tomlin is still bad at time management. Ls and Fs.

John- (F) The mismanagement of the clock at the end of the game, the decision to sit Roethlisberger with the game in the balance... Not a good day.

Steelers vs Jaguars: Positional Grades for the 20-16 Win

There are unlikely wins and then, there are wins like the one the Pittsburgh Steelers had over the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday. Despite being outplayed for the better part of 50 minutes, the Steelers were able to keep the Jaguars from running away with it and they crawled back into it. Ben Roethlisberger led back-to-back touchdown drives at the end of the drive, the latter ending with a touchdown in the final seconds. It wasn't pretty, but at the end of the day, a win is a win. Let’s go back and give out grades for every positional group and the coaches for their performance.

Quarterbacks:
  • Austin- (C+) For most of the game Roethlisberger was at an F, but at the end he really played his best football allowing him to get an average grade of C+.
  • John- (C-) For nearly three quarters this was the worst game of Ben Roethlisberger's career.  He rebounded nicely, but his play got this team in a big deficit in the first place.
Running Backs:
  • Austin- (F) Sorry Conner, but there was nothing good coming out of this performance from the running backs. Complete failure for me.
  • John- (C-) James Conner had a tough day and it wasn't really his fault on the ground, the line didn't open holes for him and the Steelers didn't run the ball much.  But, in the most important situations James Conner had two critical drops, that we would have looked back on negatively had the Steelers lost.
Wide Receivers:
  • Austin- (B) Antonio Brown broke off a long touchdown and Juju Smith-Schuster was beyond clutch in this game, so I feel like a B is good for them. Might be a little bit nice, though.
  • John- (B+) These guys were clutch down the stretch, quiet early on, but obviously they made enough big plays to win the game.
Tight Ends:
  • Austin- (C+) Vance McDonald’s touchdown was great, but for what we were expecting I just don’t feel happy with the production in terms of yardage.
  • John- (C) Not a whole lot going on here, they weren't impact in the ground game and didn't do a whole lot though the air.  But, Vance McDonald did have a huge, clutch touchdown that was a contested play in the end zone.
Offensive Line:
  • Austin- (B) This was their worst game in a while, but still not bad at all. Bad of a very good situation.
  • John- (B) They struggled at times in pass protection, but held up relatively well and they gave Roethlisberger time at the end of the game.
Defensive Line:
  • Austin- (B-) Javon Hargrave went nuts again, but they weren’t very good against the run
  • John- (B) This unit dominated the Jaguars offensive line when it comes to rushing the passer.  However, on the ground, they got manhandled early, they rebounded nicely in the second half.  But, the poor first half leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
Linebackers:
  • Austin- (C+) This group gave me the hardest time when grading, because I just didn’t really know what to give them. At the end of the day, I think I will give them a C+ because their performance was average overall.
  • John- (B) They were inconsistent against the run as well, but Vince Williams and T.J. Watt came up big several times in this game.
Defensive Backs:
  • Austin- (A-) I felt good about defensive backs in this game, besides maybe Sean Davis.
  • John- (B+) Not a whole lot going on here, they were alright in run support and weren't really tested here because Blake Bortles only threw 18 passes.  But, they didn't give up any huge plays.
Coaching:
  • Austin- (A-) I felt like this team really rallied together towards the end to win it and that’s a lot on the coaching.
  • John- (B+) The game plans may not have been great, but they rallied the team and kept them focused enough to come back and pull off an unlikely win.
